Offmaking
(16.12.2025)
Alongside the launch of its new playlist Offcult, Spotify Germany introduced an entirely new long-form format to the platform: Offmaking. Conceived as a series of short documentary films, the format offers intimate insight into the minds of selected artists featured within the playlist. Each film unfolds with depth and nuance, revealing facets of the artists rarely seen and capturing moments of subcultural relevance within the contemporary German music landscape.
The visual concept is rooted in a deliberate balance; establishing a cohesive identity tied to the format while allowing space for each artist’s individual persona to emerge. To preserve the authenticity and rawness of the narratives, all films are shot on 16mm. The medium grounds the visual language through its inherent grain, soft highlights, and deep shadows, complemented by the cool, bluish tonal qualities of the tungsten film stock. The result is distinct; extravagant yet restrained, nostalgic yet modern.
The films are unified through an overarching narrative voice-over; intimate voice notes recorded by the artists in conversation with the director. These recordings function as fragments of contemporary dialogue: personal, unfiltered, and immediate.
The first chapter of Offmaking is dedicated to Paula Hartmann.
